Choosing Washers, Nuts and Locking Elements

Learn how plain washers, spring washers, star washers, nyloc nuts and lock washers support a reliable joint.

Choosing Washers, Nuts and Locking Elements
A good bolted joint depends on more than the bolt alone. Washers, nuts and locking elements distribute load, protect surfaces and reduce loosening in service. The correct accessory should be selected according to the joint design and operating condition.

Plain washers are used to spread load and protect the mating surface. Spring washers and serrated or star washers add resistance to loosening in applications with vibration, while nyloc nuts provide prevailing torque locking using a non-metallic insert.

The material and finish of the washer or nut should be compatible with the main fastener. Using a stainless bolt with an unsuitable carbon steel accessory can reduce the overall corrosion performance of the joint.

When specifying a fastening set, include all supporting components. This helps the buyer and installer receive a complete and compatible solution.
