Self Tapping vs Self Drilling Screws

Understand the difference between self tapping and self drilling screws before selecting the right screw for sheet metal or fabrication work.

Self Tapping vs Self Drilling Screws
Self tapping and self drilling screws are often confused, but they are not the same. A self tapping screw forms or cuts its own mating thread in a pre-drilled hole. A self drilling screw includes a drill-point tip that drills the hole and forms threads in a single operation.

Use self tapping screws when the hole is already prepared or when the material requires a controlled pilot size. Use self drilling screws when faster assembly is needed in thin metal sections and light fabrication.

Selection should consider material thickness, screw head type, coating, corrosion resistance and torque requirements. For exterior or corrosive environments, choose the correct stainless or coated grade.

Always confirm whether the application needs a pilot hole. Choosing the wrong screw type can damage the part, reduce holding strength or slow down assembly.
