How to Select the Correct Bolt Grade

Understand strength classes, application loads and environmental conditions before selecting an industrial bolt.

How to Select the Correct Bolt Grade
Bolt grade should be selected from the actual joint requirement rather than appearance alone. Begin with the design load, joint type, operating temperature, vibration and the consequence of failure.

Metric property classes such as 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9 describe mechanical strength. A higher class is not automatically better because the mating nut, washer, thread engagement and tightening method must also be compatible.

Material and surface finish affect corrosion performance. Zinc-plated carbon steel may suit general indoor work, while stainless steel or a specialised coating may be required for moisture, chemicals or outdoor exposure.

Confirm the applicable DIN, ISO, ASTM or customer drawing before ordering. For safety-critical joints, obtain engineering approval and the required material or inspection certificates.
