Fasteners for Solar Mounting Structures: A Practical Selection Checklist
Key checks for solar mounting fasteners, including corrosion exposure, material compatibility, preload and documentation.
1. FOLLOW THE MOUNTING-SYSTEM SPECIFICATION
The module, rail, clamp and support-system manufacturer may specify exact bolt sizes, material grades, washers, locking features and tightening values. These requirements take priority over a generic replacement.
2. CONSIDER THE ENVIRONMENT
Indoor corrosion assumptions do not apply to an exposed rooftop or ground-mount structure. Coastal salt, industrial pollutants, high humidity and standing water can change the required material or coating system. Stainless steel, hot-dip galvanized steel and other coated systems each need compatible components and an approved corrosion strategy.
3. CHECK GALVANIC COMPATIBILITY
Solar structures commonly combine aluminium rails, coated steel supports and stainless or coated fasteners. When dissimilar metals are electrically connected in the presence of moisture, galvanic corrosion can become a concern. Material pairing, coatings, isolation details and drainage should follow the mounting-system engineering.
4. USE THE CORRECT PROPERTY CLASS
Corrosion resistance does not replace mechanical strength. The bolt, nut and washer must meet the load requirement and the specified fastener standard. Wind uplift and cyclic loading make reliable clamp load and joint design important.
5. CONTROL TIGHTENING
Use the torque or tightening method specified by the system manufacturer for the exact fastener finish and lubrication condition. Over-tightening can damage aluminium components or fasteners, while under-tightening can allow movement.
6. USE APPROPRIATE LOCKING FEATURES
Vibration and thermal cycling may be considered in the joint design. Do not add or remove spring washers, locknuts, threadlocker or other devices unless they are permitted by the approved system specification.
7. KEEP TRACEABILITY FOR COMMERCIAL PROJECTS
For larger installations, retain purchase records, material or coating certificates where required, lot information and installation documentation. This helps maintenance teams source compatible replacements later.
Solar mounting is a structural application. Final fastener selection and tightening requirements should come from the approved mounting-system design and project engineer.
