Fastener Material and Finish Guide

A buyer-friendly guide to common fastener materials, protective finishes and when to use them.

Fastener Material and Finish Guide
Fastener performance depends heavily on the combination of material and surface finish. Carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel each offer different strength and corrosion characteristics. The best choice depends on load, environment and service life expectations.

Common finishes include zinc plating, black oxide, hot dip galvanising and other protective coatings. These improve corrosion resistance, appearance or lubrication, but they can also affect thread fit and torque behaviour.

Stainless steel grades such as SS 304 and SS 316 are chosen primarily for corrosion resistance. Coated alloy steel fasteners are often used when high strength is required with controlled surface protection.

Always review the application environment together with the fastener standard and installation method. A good specification combines the right material, finish and mechanical performance.
