Common Fastener Head Types and Their Uses

A quick reference to hex, button, countersunk, pan, socket and cheese head fasteners and where each is commonly used.

Common Fastener Head Types and Their Uses
Fastener head type affects tool access, load distribution, appearance and installation depth. Hex heads are common for higher torque applications, while socket heads are preferred where a compact but strong drive is needed.

Countersunk heads sit flush with the surface and are widely used where a smooth finish is important. Pan and button heads provide a broader bearing area and are common in sheet metal, electrical and equipment assemblies.

Selecting the correct head type improves assembly efficiency and reduces service issues. Consider the drive system as well, such as slotted, Phillips, hex socket or Torx, especially where frequent maintenance is expected.

When ordering, specify both the head style and the applicable standard to avoid receiving a similar-looking but dimensionally different product.
