Choosing the Right Fastener Material and Finish

Compare carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and protective finishes for different operating environments.

Choosing the Right Fastener Material and Finish
The correct fastener material depends on mechanical load, corrosion exposure, temperature, electrical considerations and the materials being joined.

Carbon and alloy steels provide a broad range of strength levels and are commonly protected by zinc plating, black oxide, hot-dip galvanising or specialised coatings. Coating thickness can affect thread fit, so the complete specification matters.

Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance, but the correct grade must be selected for the environment. Stainless fasteners can also gall during tightening, making lubrication and installation control important.

Avoid galvanic corrosion when dissimilar metals are exposed to moisture. For unusual chemicals, coastal environments or elevated temperatures, request material compatibility guidance and confirm the required certification before purchase.
