Zinc plating and hot-dip galvanizing both use zinc to protect steel, but the coating process, thickness and dimensional effects are different. The finish should be specified as part of the fastener system rather than added as an afterthought.
ZINC ELECTROPLATING
Electroplated zinc produces a comparatively thin, controlled coating and is common on general-purpose fasteners. It can provide useful corrosion protection in suitable indoor or mild-service environments and is available in different passivation systems and appearances.
HOT-DIP GALVANIZING
Hot-dip galvanizing immerses steel in molten zinc and normally produces a much thicker protective layer. It is widely used for exposed structural, infrastructure and outdoor applications where a heavier zinc coating is desired.
WHY THREAD FIT NEEDS SPECIAL ATTENTION
A thicker coating changes thread dimensions. Hot-dip galvanized bolt and nut systems therefore require compatible thread allowances and are not simply ordinary finished threads with extra zinc added. ISO 965-4:2025 and ISO 965-5:2025 cover dimensional approaches for hot-dip galvanized ISO metric external and mating internal threads. Procurement should specify the complete galvanized fastener system so bolt and nut threads remain compatible.
CORROSION PERFORMANCE IS NOT JUST THE COATING NAME
Actual service life depends on coating thickness, environment, humidity, contaminants, installation damage and whether cut or abraded areas expose the base steel. Coastal or chemical exposure may require a different material or coating system entirely.
HIGH-STRENGTH FASTENERS NEED PROCESS CONTROL
Coating choices for high-strength steel fasteners require technical review because manufacturing and finishing processes can introduce additional risks. Do not re-plate or change the finish on critical high-strength fasteners without an approved process and specification.
WHAT TO PUT ON A PURCHASE ORDER
Include the fastener standard, size, property class, coating or finish standard, required thickness or class where applicable, matching nut and washer finish, quantity and certification requirements.
The safest rule is simple: select the coating as part of the engineered joint. A finish that looks similar may not have the same corrosion performance, dimensions or installation behaviour.
